Boy Scout

Scout Sunday: Feb 7, 2016

Posted on

This Sunday is Scout Sunday. Hopefully your unit has made some plans to participate. If not, it is not too late. Simply

having your boys agreed to attend one service together in uniform, regardless of denomination is a major contribution. A small contingent in uniform is usually The desirable enough target that any minister would want to recognize the group from the pulpit.

Another alternative is to work hand in hand with the pastor to become an integral part of the service. It may be a simple matter of greeting attendees. It may be helping the ushers. In any case, the idea is to be a participant in the service.Similar ideas can be done for Scout Shabbat for members of synagogues.

Along with these Eagle Scouts, our troops deserve some recognition for mentoring these scouts:

  1. Troop 358 at St Alphonsius Catholic Church in Zionsville had 12 Eagle Scouts.
  2. Troop 514 at St Monica’s Catholic Church in Pike Township suffered a fire at their church but still mustered 7 Eagle Scouts.
  3. Troop 804 at the American Legion Post in Zionsville had 5 Eagle Scouts.
  4. Troop 269 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on the south end of Pike Township had 5 Eagle Scouts.
  5. Troop 191 at Church at the Crossing had 4 Eagle Scouts.
  6. Troop 174 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic had 4 Eagle Scouts.
  7. Troop 56 at St Luke’s United Methodist Church had 4 Eagle Scouts.
  8. Troop 73 at St Paul’s Episcopal Church had 3 Eagle Scouts.
  9. Troop 343 sponsored by Pike Township Fire Department and meeting at Bethel United Methodist Church had 2 Eagle Scouts.
  10. Troop 69 at Trader’s Point Christian Church had 2 Eagle Scouts.
  11. Troop 586 at the Zionsville LDS Meeting House had 1 Eagle Scout.
  12. Troop 35 at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church had 1 Eagle Scout.
  13. Troop 18 at Second Presbyterian Church had 1 Eagle Scout.

This means that of our 13 active troops in the district, each and every one of them had an Eagle Scout this past year. That speaks very highly of the quality of scouting across our district.

We have no district records to easily assess the past history of Eagle Scouts, but based on Jerry’s recollection, this has been a record breaking year. Customarily, Jerry schedules about 35 Eagle boards per year. Current trends suggest that the pace is not backing off any time soon.

Thank you to the scouters whose mentoring helped these scouts reach the Eagle rank.

Congratulations to the new Eagle Scouts and their families. May they see many Eagle Palms in the next several years.

Part-time Patrol Method

Posted on Updated on

Bobwhite Blather blog has a great article about scout troops that believe they are running a successful patrol method.

Frank questions whether this is truly an example of running a successful patrol method.

This is especially a waste of great learning opportunities when there are so many resources for improving the patrol method. Clarke Green has an entire section of his website dedicated to this one question and its philosophical reasons. He even has written a book about the process of implementing the patrol system from the scoutmaster’s perspective.

The recent Eagle Scout turned blogger Enoch Heise has a wonderful post on the real basics and purpose of the patrol. Not too many months ago (from an adult’s perspective), Enoch was an SPL. Now as newly minted adult scouter he uses his practical lessons to teach other adults.

There are even books on the subject. Here is one from the British Scout Association in 1943. Here is one of more recent vintage, that I can only find in paperback. I have read it. It has great stuff.

Read more about the patrol method. Become a believer.

Congratulations to the newest Eagles!

Here is the latest report from Eagle Boards Coordinator Jerry Simon:

These North Star scouts successfully completed their Eagle BOR last night, December 9th. This will be their date-of-rank but only after the applications are approved by National. Normally it takes two to four weeks for the Eagle Rank packet to get back to CAC but, due to the time of year, it may be closer to the longer period.[]
