District Pinewood Derby 2017 Track Sign Up Open

From North Star District Pinewood Derby Coordinator Bill Buchalter:

North Star Pack Leaders,

It’s almost that time of year again for Pinewood Derbies! I have begun putting together a schedule for the packs in the district who need help with a track, and wanted to reach out and let you all know what days are already spoken for and encourage you to send your requests in soon to make sure you get the date you want.

  • Wednesday, Feb 22nd – Pack 179
  • Saturday, Feb 25th – Pack 830
  • Monday, March 6th – Pack 35

When you send your request please make sure to specify the date and time you’d like to run your race, and what time we can be there to set up. We prefer at least 30 minutes prior to race start for set up. Also, it helps to have a rough idea how many boys are participating in your pack so we have an idea how long it will be.

If you are no longer the leader in charge of organizing the derby for your pack, please let me know and forward me the contact information for your replacement.

Thanks, and I look forward to helping your boys have an awesome Pinewood Derby.

Bill Buchalter
Cub Master – Pack 830

Troops should remember this is a great way to see our Cubs and look at making recruiting efforts.

Pinewood Derby Planning

I have received the following email from our new District Pinewood Derby Coordinator Bill Buchalter, also Cubmaster of Pike Township’s Pack 830.

I’ve gotten a number of requests from various packs for help with their pinewood derbies. Please let the packs know to contact me ASAP if they need help. The calendar is filling up fast, and if packs need help they may have to find an alternate date if they don’t get on the schedule soon. The dates I currently have signed up are:

Jan 31st – Pack 18 – 2nd Presbyterian Church
Feb 20th – Pack 830 – Eagle Creek Community Church
Feb 24th – Pack 179 – Crooked Creek Elementary
March 7th – Pack 35 – St. Joan of Arc
March 13th – Pack 175 – Christ the King

Bill Buchalter
Cub Master – Pack 830

If there are scheduling problems, please do not hesitate to let Bill know. We are willing to work with you to find alternatives.

Remember this year, the district is using a new track which is longer. Please make sure that you verify that your space works with the new track. If it does not, we will work on alternatives. (I would encourage creative thinking to make the new track work, since it will make the races more exciting.)

Pinewood Derby Track

Posted on Updated on

As we enter into a new season of Pinewood Derby racing, we will have some changes to how district supplies tracks.

Fred Steinhoff, our stalwart Pinewood Derby track provider, is preparing to retire out of state. Fred has been working with Pack 830 Bill Buchalter to hand off those responsibilities. Pinewood Derby track

Recently Pack 830 has built a new and beautiful track. It is a bit longer than the old track. Consequently, the races will have a bit of a different feel.

Bill Buchalter said, “As much as I am available I will help those packs with track setup and with running their derby for them as Fred did in the past.” Bill explained that his job takes him out of state sometimes with less warning than he would wish for pinewood derby planning, but there is a plan in place. “[A]ny commitments that I make to help with another pack’s pinewood derby will have to be with the understanding that [I might be] shipped out for work…. Fortunately, there are lots of other parents in Pack 830 that routinely step up to help out – so if I’m not available we should hopefully be able to find someone else who can.”

If there are emergencies, Fred Steinhoff is still available.

Now is the time to make sure that your pack has reserved the track for your pinewood derby. Please contact Bill via email at

Fred also reminds us that the District Pinewood Derby will be Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the American Legion Post #3 in Broad Ripple. Click the link to reserve your ticket. The top 3 finishers compete for free. All others, including adults and siblings, are welcome to enter events for a fee. There will be Cub scout official heats that comply with BSA rules, adult heats, sibling heats, and non-compliant heats.Look forward to seeing you there.
