UPDATE 7/21/15: Michelle Carroll has had Del-Mi’s Troop 303 and Pioneer’s Crew 359 take charge of one full day’s calendar. She is begging for similar support from other units. So only August 8th and 9th are covered completely.
The following is a request for volunteers from Council’s Michelle Carroll, the State Fair Scout Base Camp Chair.
For some of you that have worked at Base Camp in previous years, I hope that you will consider volunteering again this year. I like to consider all of you my “seasoned pros.” If you have not worked Base Camp before, it is a great way to interact with the public through hands-on activities that tie into scouting. Sign-up is easy (online), and we are throwing in something new this year for our volunteers. The sign-up times on the link are going to be adjusted, so I will include the new times in this email.
What I am needing from all of you is to please pass along the following information to your troop/crew. It will include what they need to know about the Base Camp, what is required of them, and a few guidelines that must be followed. Feel free to copy/paste the following into a group email, post it to your troop website, or print it as a hand-out for one of your meetings. By sending out this email, you are helping me to reach out to over 340 units, which saves me from having to make phone calls to each and every troop and crew in the Crossroads of America Council.
It’s time for the 2015 Indiana State Fair (August 7-23)!
The Boy Scout area Base Camp is looking for volunteers this year to help work at different activity stations during the length of the fair. Sign-up can be done easily with the attached link. The sign-up times will be 8:30am for first shift, and 2:30pm for second shift. The sign-up times on the link show 8am start time for first shift, and 9:30pm ending time for second shift. The correct shift start and end times will be 8:30am and 8:30pm. These times allow you to choose when to enjoy the fair, either in the morning or in the afternoon. Volunteers will receive a free ticket to the fair and a parking pass. These will be handed out at the Korean Church on Binford Avenue, near 52nd Street. I don’t have a set time for ticket pick-up yet, but as soon as I know I will pass that along to you. Parking passes will need to be turned in at Base Camp once you arrive. If you are planning on volunteering for the afternoon shift, but want to browse the fair in the morning, you will need to pick up your ticket and pass in the morning. We do not mail out fair tickets or parking passes beforehand.
The volunteers we are looking for can include adult leaders, Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew, troops, crews, former scouts, former/current camp staff, and adults/parents. The council would like volunteers to be 15 years old and older. We allow 14 year old volunteers, but they must have a parent with them at all times during their shift. They are not to be dropped off. Working at Base Camp counts towards service hours, so these can be signed off by any of the Camp Staff working at Base Camp. Some of the items you may want to bring with you to Base Camp are: water/water bottle, hat, sunscreen, cooler with snacks, raincoat/poncho (weather), spending money, and a day bag or backpack to hold your items. Class A’s are required.No neckerchief is needed.
What does a volunteer do at Base Camp? Volunteers will be at different stations throughout our area. They may be demonstrating how to make a fire using flint and steel with cotton balls and bird’s nest; some may be showing visitors how to make their own rope, using our rope machine. Other stations are still in the works, so I will pass that information along when I get it. Stage show presentations will be done again this year, and I heard that the Pacers and Indy Fuel mascots will be making random appearances in our area during the fair. There will always be a full-time camp staffer there to help you out, so don’t worry if you’re not sure what to do. Also, the Council is doing something new this year for volunteers that sign up. Signed Indiana Pacer items will be awarded to random volunteers through a drawing sometime during the fair.
