Wood Badge Training for advanced adult leadership has been scheduled for 2017.
The Spring Session will be April 20-22, 2017 and May 11-13, 2017.
The Fall Session will be September 17-19 and the following weekend September 22-24, 2017.
Start recruiting your Pack, Troop, and Crew adult leaders now. The more notice they have on their calendar, the better the chances of their participating.
Units with more Wood Badge trained adults tend to be healthier and more successful.
Remember you must be Trained in your current position to be eligible.
Here are the materials to use for publicizing the Winter Camporee beginning Friday, January 20, 2017 at 6:00 pm. (Inauguration Day. Let the arguments begin!)
Online registration and information for the 2017 University of Scouting at Warren Central High School are now open. The classes are on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 7:00 registration to 4:00 pm end of classes. The Course Catalog can be downloaded here, too.
The University of Scouting (often the coldest day of the year, so great to be indoors!) is a one-stop offering of many of the mandatory and elective trainings offered in the BSA. Many of the common online trainings are offered live, like Den Leader, Cubmaster Specific, Committee Challenge, and Venturing Advisor Specific! Many live-only classes are offered, too: Scoutmaster Specific and Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills.
If you have scouters who will need training for future rechartering or scouters will be assuming new position in Fall 2017, this is the time to get them trained. If you have prospects that you would like to recruit but are hesitant, get them in the class to learn more about what they are being asked to do.
The most popular classes fill up quickly and discounts for early sign up are available, so sign up today!
Looking for Environmental/Conservation hours? Look no further than the Indiana’s DNR. You may contact Jeff Cummings, the naturalist, at Fort Harrison State Park at (317) 591-0904 or (812) 849-4004. He is always looking for help. Please note that he is very well versed in YPT process so he will require appropriate adult participation.
Just a quick reminder that tonight at 6:30 pm is the final district training session for the year. Sign up closes at 3:00 pm. Walk ins are welcome.
St Luke’s United Methodist Church’s outbuilding Luke’s Lodge (second floor, westside) will be the location.
Classes offered:
Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training
Troop and Pack Committee Challenge.
At the same time, Council will be offering two classes at the Scout Service Center on Fall Creek Road. More information at www.crossroadsbsa.org/training. These classes start at 7:00 pm.
District officers have received a myriad of complaints about my.scouting.org’s online training system. Most are reporting that the scouter has taken an online module and not received credit for completing the module. The scouter then tries to complete the module again without an improved result.
Given that district is working hard to have 100% Trained adult leadership, this presents a major obstacle to that goal.
Some tips for dealing with these problems are
Do not repeat a module. Preferably, take a screenshot of the end of the module. If it does not give you credit for completion, the screenshot will be accepted.
If you cannot take a screenshot, keep a handwritten log of the modules giving you problems. Then move on to the next module. When you are done with training, send Jeff Heck an email of the problem modules. We can manually enter completion for for the entire course but not individual modules, so it is important you complete the training before telling us about problem modules. We are powerless to help you until course completion.
Take in-person training. Most attendees report getting more value from the conversations than from the online modules. Remember you will get credit for training in rechartering for signing up and paying your course fees, if you send an email receipt of the course. This includes tonight’s classes, council training, and University of Scouting on January 14, 2017.
Remember recharter is now overdue, so we would really appreciate closing out these training issues as soon as possible.

WIllie Award
There were some questions about the grading for the winter camporee. There will be a revised score card that will edit out the cooking related items in camps. Brian has graciously volunteered to edit that score card and we will release it for inspection. Also of discussion, it was noted that camp gadgets and gateway assembly could occur prior to the campout since the rules do not forbid bring them pre-assembled. Also, it was requested that troops receive better feedback concerning the cause of point deductions. This will be requested of the judges.
Camping at Redwing
In the event of snow coverage, it will not be obvious so please note that fire rings are located near the edge of each campsite. It was noted that this is of advantage since troops may greater utilize each site. This setup is apparently unique to Redwing.

Patch
The patch for the camporee is almost complete. I have seen the draft and it is excellent. It depicts Willie in the foreground and Shackleton’s broken ship in the background. Thanks Mr. Crow for working with the artist. Once the final is prepared I will send out the jpeg with a prepared flier that troops can print out inviting scouts.
Rick Aker is feverishly prepping as well. Thanks Rick!

A report from District Pinewood Derby Chair Bill Buchalter:
I would like to remind North Star District pack leaders to contact me if they need a track in the upcoming Pinewood Derby season. My email address wbbuch1@comcast.net is the best way to contact me about arranging a date.
