New Pack Start Ups Need Troop Help Now
Currently the District is looking at starting or rebooting 3 to 4 packs in the next 30 days. These packs will need help from veteran scouters to make them work.
Each troop should always have an eye on one or two packs that feed Webelos into the troop. These prospective scouts are the lifeblood of our troops.
All too often, the scoutmaster corps and troop committee members are exhausted of their time and energy after giving to their home unit. They don’t have anymore to give.
One of the best ways for a troop to support a Cub scout pack is identify a past den mother who is not currently active with the troop. Through cooperation with District Commissioner Jeff Heck, she can find a role to assist a pack. She would not be asked to join the pack committee, be a cubmistress, or be a den leader. She would simply be an advisor.
We need four past den mothers who can serve in this role. Please contact Commissioner Jeff Heck at jheck@cacnorthstar.org to find out how this can work.
Whoever places the former den mother in a pack has the best chance of recruiting scouts in the future.
This Thursday: Roundtable and Chartered Org Rep Training
District Commissioner Jeff Heck encourages all units to send adult leaders to Roundtable. Former Cubmaster for Pack 105 and current Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 358 Tom Sugar will be leading a discussion on Cub recruitment.
Tom was instrumental in recruiting in Pack 105 when it started a few years ago. Tom put a heavy dose of outdoor experiences into his Cub programming. As a result, he used the outdoor experiences as part of the Pack’s marketing.
Come be a part of the conversation about Cub and Scout recruiting. Learn how to tell your story about what you do in a way that is interesting and persuasive to both boys and parents.
After the 6:30 p.m. general session for open conversations, Tom will start with his discussions.
Also, Chartered Organization Representative Training (#D72) will be held after the general session. (Estimated start time 7:00 p.m.) This training is required for all Chartered Org. Reps. Please makes sure that your Chartered Org Rep is aware of this session and either has plans to attend or has contacted the District Commissioner to let the Commissioner Service know your Chartered Org Rep’s availability for another training session.
Chartered Org Reps have not been actively participating in the North Star District for the last few years. Our theory is that part of this low participation is that our units and the District have not made a concerted effort to train them on what the position’s responsibilities are. This training will help to begin remedying this problem.
The Chartered Org Rep is supposed to supervise all scouting activities for the chartered organization. The Chartered Org Rep is sometimes jokingly referred to as the Chief Scouting Officer of the Chartered Organization. The Rep should be supervising the units and actively participating in appointing a unit chair. The Rep should be attending District Committee meetings as the Chartered Organization’s representative to District and to Council.
Please help us encourage our Chartered Org Reps know how important training is for the health of your unit and your chartered organization.
June Roundtable Agenda
Our June Roundtable will be held, as always, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N Meridian St, 4th Floor, Indianapolis. RSVPs are welcome, but not required.
We plan on introducing our new District Executive Con Sullivan. He will be asked to give a few remarks.
The opening general session will be “Maximizing Council Resources for Your Unit” by District Commissioner Jeff Heck.
We will then break into Cub Roundtables and Scout Roundtables.
Sharla Merrick our Cub Roundtable Commissioner will host a conversation on Cub Recruitment, with a special emphasis on what will be happening in July, August, and September this year.
Jeff Heck will host a conversation about planning high adventure and using fellow district members as resources. We will discuss BSA bases and non-BSA trip ideas, planning cycles, and problems to watch out for.
Please be sure to invite any and all adults from your units. It is very important to get as many membership coordinators from all of our units to participate in Sharla’s discussion. Cub Recruiting this year is going to require Boy Scout Troops’ help, so please have your membership coordinator attend.

Have you ever wondered what a commissioner is? Have you ever wanted to be trained as a commissioner?
Monday, May 18th will be your opportunity to come learned about being a commissioner. It is in opportunity to serve units. It’s an opportunity to learn more about how Scouting is supposed to work. It gives you the opportunity to see other units in action so that you can take some of these ideas back to your home unit.
Join us at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., Indianapolis. We will be entering on the north side of the building at entrance six or seven. Classes for unit commissioner basic training and assistant district commissioner start at 7 PM. If you’re interested in attending, send an RSVP through the event calendar
